Spotify admits: Massive music leak due to third-party system breach.

A massive leak of data from the “Spotify” platform has sparked controversy, after the disclosure of the withdrawal of nearly 300 terabytes of information, in one of the largest illegal data collection operations targeting music streaming services.

According to available details, the leak included approximately 256 million records of song metadata, in addition to tens of millions of audio files, noting that the audio content has not been published yet, as only the metadata has been revealed. “Spotify” acknowledged the breach, explaining that a third party used illegal methods to bypass digital protection measures, and announced the start of an internal investigation into the incident.

In contrast, no complaints have been reported from users regarding the leakage of their personal data or the hacking of their accounts, indicating that the incident targeted the platform’s content and technical structure primarily, rather than targeting the users themselves.

However, concerns are focused on the potential future implications, as analysts believe that the amount of data withdrawn could theoretically allow the creation of a parallel music streaming platform, noting that intellectual property rights will remain the main barrier. In addition, the incident has reignited the debate on the dividing lines between the preservation of cultural content and digital piracy, and highlighted the weakness of major platforms’ archives despite the development of protection systems.
