Alaa El-Din Awad Nagd, the official spokesman for the alliance, explained that “ تأسيس reassures all Sudanese people and the people of South Sudan, as well as foreign and local companies operating in the oil sector, of the alliance forces’ full commitment to securing oil facilities in Heglig, including transport lines and all facilities, in addition to forming a special force to protect petroleum and oil facilities.”
He affirmed that the alliance forces will allow all technical teams, engineers, and workers at the Heglig field the opportunity to resume maintenance work without any obstacles, in order to ensure the full continuity of production.
The spokesman pointed out that the alliance has made diligent efforts to secure civilians and provide safe corridors for grazing, trade, and transportation, with the aim of supporting security and social stability in the region, which shares a demographic link with the state of South Sudan.
It is worth mentioning that the Rapid Support Forces had announced earlier today, Monday, that they had taken control of the strategic Heglig oil field in South Kordofan, after the withdrawal of government forces and workers from the site on Sunday.
Heglig is located near the border with South Sudan and includes the main station for processing South Sudanese oil, which relies primarily on pipelines passing through Sudan for export purposes. This oil is a major source of income for the government of South Sudan, and it is also an important source of hard currency for Sudan, as the crude oil is transported via the Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company pipeline to Port Sudan on the Red Sea.
It should be noted that the ongoing war since April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has caused frequent interruptions to South Sudanese oil flows, which before the outbreak of the conflict ranged between 100,000 and 150,000 barrels per day exported through Sudanese territory.
