Google has announced the launch of a new feature in the Google Maps application aimed at conserving battery power. This feature has begun to appear on the company’s Pixel 10 phones as part of the November 2025 Pixel Drop update.
Google explained that the “Power Saving Mode” feature is capable of extending the mobile phone’s battery life by up to four additional hours, which is especially useful during long trips where it is difficult to charge the phone while using it on the dashboard.
The new mode only works in portrait mode and on the lock screen, where the application switches to a simple monochrome design while maintaining the basic map and displaying only necessary information, such as the next turn and the estimated travel time, while removing other data such as the current speed.
Users can scroll down to see notifications, and the application returns to its normal mode once the power button is pressed, the screen is touched, or when the specified destination is reached.
Google indicated that this mode will be activated automatically via an update on its part, with the possibility of disabling it by entering the application settings, then pressing “Navigation”, then selecting “Driving options”, and then activating or deactivating the power saving mode.
This feature is a practical solution for drivers who rely on their phones instead of specialized GPS systems, as it can extend usage time during long trips and reduce the need for portable chargers. This addition could be crucial in emergencies or on remote roads.
Google is expected to expand the scope of this feature to include other devices in the future, while limiting it to the “Pixel 10” series currently is considered a temporary step, as the company deliberately launches some features first for its devices exclusively before generalizing them to the rest of the devices.
It is expected that Google will also integrate power saving mode into the Maps application in the android Auto car system later. (aitnews)
