Katz stated that following Zamir’s statement regarding the responsibility of commanders and officers for the events of October 7, 2023, he instructed the comptroller of the security establishment, Brigadier General (Res.) Yair Velinesky, to conduct a thorough and comprehensive examination of the “Turgeman Committee” report. Katz believes that there is an urgent need to conduct further investigations into some aspects that have not been examined before, in addition to other aspects that the committee did not adequately address, because it only studied the existing investigations, as well as the need to complete the investigations that the committee described as incomplete.
Katz also directed the Ministry of Defense comptroller to expand the scope of investigations to include the responsibility of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) office.
According to “Walla,” the Chief of Staff presented the “Turgeman Committee” report to Katz without informing him in advance of its content, which surprised the latter by the personal conclusions contained therein, after he learned about them only through the media.
Katz indicated that the comptroller of the security establishment will be asked to prepare a recommendation that includes unified standards for drawing personal conclusions, and that this recommendation will be submitted within one month.
In a related context, Katz affirmed that “the issue of appointing a military attaché in Washington is not related to the subject and does not constitute a pretext for delaying appointments within the army,” in a clear reference to the existing dispute between him and Zamir, who strongly opposes the appointment of Katz’s military secretary, Guy Marquezano, to the position of military attaché in Washington.
Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir took a series of disciplinary measures and dismissals yesterday against a number of senior officers, following evaluation sessions he held with them, against the backdrop of the failure to prevent the October 7, 2023 attack, according to the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation.
