Washington State Resident Dies After Contracting Rare Strain of Bird Flu: How Serious is the Situation?

يُعتقد أن رجلاً من ولاية واشنطن الأمريكية قد توفي متأثراً بإصابته بسلالة نادرة من أنفلونزا الطيور، لكن مسؤولي الصحة في الولاية أكدوا يوم الجمعة أن خطر انتشار العدوى على الجمهور يبقى ضئيلاً.

أوضحت وزارة الصحة في ولاية واشنطن في بيان لها أن الرجل، وهو مسن يعاني من مشاكل صحية أخرى، كان يخضع للعلاج من سلالة أنفلونزا الطيور المعروفة باسم “اتش 5 ان 5″، ليصبح بذلك على ما يبدو أول شخص يُصاب بهذه السلالة على مستوى العالم.

أشار مسؤولو الصحة إلى أن الرجل، الذي ينحدر من مقاطعة جرايز هاربور التي تبعد حوالي 125 كيلومترًا جنوب غرب سياتل، كان يمتلك قطيعًا من الدواجن المنزلية التي اختلطت ببعض الطيور البرية في فناء منزله الخلفي.

أكد البيان الصادر عن مسؤولي الصحة بالولاية أن “الخطر على الجمهور لا يزال منخفضًا، لم تثبت إصابة أيّ شخص آخر معني بأنفلونزا الطيور”.

كما أضاف مسؤولو الصحة أنهم سيراقبون عن كثب أي شخص كان على اتصال مباشر بالرجل، مؤكدين في الوقت نفسه أنه “لا يوجد دليل على انتقال هذا الفيروس بين الناس”.

A man from Washington state is believed to have died after contracting a rare strain of bird flu, but state health officials said Friday that the risk of infection spreading to the public remains low.

The Washington State Department of Health explained in a statement that the man, an elderly person with other health problems, was being treated for a strain of bird flu known as “H5N5,” making him apparently the first person to be infected with this strain worldwide.

Health officials indicated that the man, who was from Grays Harbor County, about 125 kilometers southwest of Seattle, owned a flock of domestic poultry that mixed with some wild birds in his backyard.

“The risk to the public remains low; no other person involved has been proven to have contracted bird flu,” the statement from state health officials confirmed.

Health officials also added that they will closely monitor anyone who has had direct contact with the man, while confirming that “there is no evidence of this virus spreading between people.”
