Barcelona club president Joan Laporta has confirmed his final decision regarding the return of Argentinian star Lionel Messi, who plays for Inter Miami, to the “Spotify Camp Nou” stadium.
Messi left the Catalan club in the summer of 2021, shortly after Laporta took over as club president, due to insufficient financial resources to register him and offer him a new contract.
In statements published by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on his X account, Laporta stated regarding the possibility of Messi returning to Barcelona: “His return as a player is completely unrealistic, and at the moment, he is under contract with Inter Miami.”
He added: “The club is building a project for the present and the future, so it seems complicated, and it is difficult to live in the past while wanting to move forward.”
A Golden Career
Lionel Messi’s career with Barcelona was one of the most wonderful periods in the history of football, as he shone exceptionally at the Camp Nou and at the level of the game as a whole.
From his first appearance with the first team in 2004, until his departure in the summer of 2021, Messi gave everything a player can give to a single club, achieving amazing numbers and achievements that made him an unforgettable symbol in the history of Barcelona.
During the 778 matches he played with the team, Messi scored 672 goals and assisted 303 goals, becoming the player with the most goal contributions in football history with a single club.
Messi was not just a goalscorer, but also a distinguished playmaker, capable of building attacks, making a difference, and scoring goals at the same time. These diverse skills were an essential part of Messi’s footballing personality within the club.
Messi led Barcelona to an unprecedented golden era, contributing to winning four Champions League titles, ten Spanish League titles, in addition to the Club World Cup, the Copa del Rey, and the European and Spanish Super Cups.
In each season, Messi not only maintained his level, but exceeded expectations of what a single player could offer the team.
With coach Pep Guardiola, Messi reached the peak of glory and became the cornerstone of a historic team that presented one of the most wonderful styles of football.
During that period, Messi was an example of a false striker, confusing defenders with his smart movements, and creating an era of enjoyable play that made Barcelona a global reference.
Despite the change of coaches and generations, Messi remained the constant element, the savior, and the leader who was relied upon in difficult times. His importance increased in the years leading up to his departure, as he carried the team on his shoulders and was the primary creative force without a doubt.
Messi’s departure left a large void, not only within the team, but in the hearts of the fans who lived the most beautiful moments with him, and despite the painful end, his legacy with Barcelona remains greater than just numbers.
Life After Barcelona
Messi’s departure from Barcelona in the summer of 2021 was a major turning point in his football career, after he was forced to leave the Camp Nou due to the financial crisis the club was going through.
Despite his strong emotional connection to Barcelona, he had to face new challenges with Paris Saint-Germain, starting a journey completely different from the one he spent at the Camp Nou.
In Paris, Messi faced difficulties adapting in his first season, due to changes in tactics and the great pressure associated with being in a team that also includes Neymar and Mbappe.
However, the Argentinian star had a more mature and impactful second season, contributing with goals and assists, and showing glimpses of his familiar skills.
Despite the criticism, especially due to the failure in the Champions League, Messi won the French League, and proved himself as one of the best playmakers in the team, in addition to leading the Argentinian national team to win the 2022 World Cup, which is one of the greatest moments in his career.
But the atmosphere in Paris was not the most suitable for him psychologically and in terms of the fans, so he decided to embark on a new adventure outside Europe, this time in the American League with Inter Miami in the summer of 2023.
This move was a positive turning point, as Messi found a calm and suitable environment to relax after years of pressure in Europe.
With Inter Miami, Messi reignited the passion of American fans for football, and helped the club win its first title in history, which is the Leagues Cup, and delivered outstanding technical performances.
He also attracted unprecedented global attention to the American League, and redefined the role of the star player outside Europe, through a combination of high performance and huge marketing value.
Thus, Messi’s journey after Barcelona proved that he is still able to make an impact wherever he goes, maintaining his footballing magic, and painting new chapters in his legendary career inside and outside Europe.
