Club Brugge KV v FC Barcelona - UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD4

Barcelona has responded to the Spanish Federation’s statement regarding the exclusion of young winger Lamine Yamal from the Spanish national team during the current break.

The Spanish national team is preparing for matches against Georgia and Cyprus in the qualifiers for the 2024 European Championship.

The Spanish Football Federation has expressed its dissatisfaction with the way it learned about the treatment of Lamine Yamal’s groin injury, on the day of the national team gathering.

The Federation’s statement read: “The medical staff of the Spanish Federation wishes to express its surprise and dissatisfaction after learning at 13:47 on Monday, November 10, the day of the official gathering with the national team, that the player Lamine Yamal underwent an interventional treatment procedure using radio waves to treat his groin pain in the morning of the same day.” It added: “This was done without any prior notification to the national team’s medical staff, and we were only informed of the details via a report we received at 22:40 last night, which included a medical recommendation for rest for 7-10 days.”

It is worth noting that the tension between Barcelona and the Spanish national team dates back to the beginning of the season, when Lamine returned injured from the national team camp, which led to him missing four matches with Barcelona.

The Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo” stated that Barcelona’s medical staff immediately informed the Spanish Football Federation of the matter.

The newspaper confirmed that Barcelona affirms its commitment to acting responsibly and in constant coordination with the player to ensure his recovery and return to the field in the best condition.

It also reported that Barcelona consulted the Belgian doctor Ernest Schilders, who specializes in this type of injury.

The newspaper pointed out that Dr. Schilders visited Lamine Yamal at Barcelona’s facilities to assess the developments of the injury, and confirmed that the situation is under control despite the potential risks.

It explained that, in agreement with the consulting doctor, the club’s medical services, and the player, it was decided to apply radiofrequency treatment, which includes a period of rest and special monitoring, and the Spanish Federation was informed of this immediately.

Barcelona breathes a sigh of relief

Barcelona has received a positive medical report from a Belgian expert specializing in the case of Lamine Yamal, one of the team’s most important talents.

The Catalan club has taken all necessary measures to follow up on the player’s condition after the coaching staff felt the need to verify the developments in his injury.

According to the Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo,” Barcelona sought the help of a Belgian doctor specializing in the treatment of groin muscle injuries.

This doctor is one of the leading names worldwide in this field, having previously dealt with more than 3,000 similar cases among athletes.

Dr. Pruna, head of Barcelona’s medical staff, coordinated with the Belgian doctor, where he supervised Yamal’s examination and follow-up of his recovery.

The newspaper reported that the Belgian doctor expressed his satisfaction with the player’s physical condition, confirming that the treatment program is proceeding correctly with a clear improvement in his condition.

The Belgian expert emphasized that early detection of the injury and the start of intensive treatment contribute to the improvement of Lamine Yamal’s condition.

He stressed the need for the player to adhere to the instructions of doctors and coaches to avoid any relapse.

There is no concern in Barcelona regarding Lamine Yamal’s condition, especially as he has been performing at a high level in recent weeks.

However, the club wanted to get the opinion of a global expert to reinforce confidence in the current treatment plan.

In the same context, coach Hans Flick said: “Lamine has changed his discipline, and he is better now, he works hard both on the field and in the gym, and it is very important for this injury that he continues in this approach.”

Thanks to these positive evaluations, Barcelona feels reassured about Yamal’s condition, who continues to work hard to maintain his physical fitness.
