Lebanon is experiencing a difficult phase in light of the escalating Israeli military action, amidst political and security analyses, and international warnings, of a return to war that the country cannot bear the consequences of, as it has not yet emerged from the repercussions of the last war that left martyrs, wounded, and great destruction in the southern suburb, the south, and the Bekaa.
Strategic expert Riad Kahwaji points to an increase in the frequency and quality of Israeli targeting since the ceasefire in November 2024, which has begun to target senior leaders, adding: “This is an indication that Israel possesses intelligence penetration within Hezbollah.”
The intensification of Israeli raids comes in the context of increasing pressure on Lebanon, so will the plan of pressure under fire succeed? Kahwaji believes, in an interview with mtv website, that “so far, it does not seem that this plan will succeed because Hezbollah’s position is still linked to Iran.”
On the other hand, the “Le Figaro” report highlighted “a new military structure within Hezbollah and a younger leadership more capable of keeping pace with technological development,” hence, Kahwaji believes that “this does not mean anything, and does not lead to anything at a time when the Bashar al-Assad regime fell, and the party’s supplies from Syria were cut off,” and continues: “It is true that Hezbollah has reorganized itself and is still trying to rearm itself, but it is very far from what it was in terms of strength before the last war, and after what happened in Syria, it is impossible for the party to return as it was.”
Will the war reignite? Kahwaji believes that “the indicators of the possibility of a return to war are always present, as we are in a state of ceasefire and the war did not end with the signing of the ceasefire agreement in November 2024.”
Kahwaji concludes by saying: “There are clauses in the agreement that must be implemented in order for the ceasefire to turn into an end to the war, and these things have not been achieved, and therefore, the possibility of a return to war exists.”
