Lebanon Today

A shock shakes the foundations of the Lebanese University, as a scandal of forging grades in the Faculty of Law – Branch 1, was revealed, representing a severe blow to official educational institutions.

The Attorney General of Cassation, Judge Jamal al-Hajjar, has begun investigating the case in coordination with the Public Prosecution Office of Appeal in Mount Lebanon, after receiving information indicating that personal relationships and favoritism were favored over the standard of competence, and the educational process was transformed into an arena for interests and mediations.

According to the information available, the investigations revealed the existence of financial transactions exceeding $22,000, in addition to the involvement of a lawyer who was found to have obtained a doctorate from the university illegally, which requires summoning him for investigation after obtaining permission from the Bar Association. The investigations also revealed the presence of a number of Kuwaiti students, including officers, who obtained university degrees in similar ways.

Accordingly, Judge Al-Hajjar issued a decision today to seal the initial investigations conducted by the State Security Directorate, which resulted in the arrest of three people: the director of the college, the secretary, and a Lebanese student.

The case was referred to the Public Prosecution Office of Appeal in Mount Lebanon, according to jurisdiction, to file an indictment against the detainees and anyone else proven to be involved in this case, which raises questions about the challenges related to academic and administrative oversight at the Lebanese University.
