In an exclusive interview with the Syrian “Al-Ikhbariya” channel, veteran politician Walid Jumblatt, the former leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, addressed the latest developments on the Lebanese and Syrian scenes, reviewing the close ties that have historically united the two countries.
Jumblatt expressed his concern about the continued infiltration of remnants of the Assad regime into Lebanese territories, noting that they still pose a threat to the national security of both Lebanon and Syria.
Jumblatt stated: “Some political parties in Lebanon have not grasped history, nor have they seen the fall of Assad and the fall of the Ba’ath Party.”
Jumblatt also pointed to “suspicious attempts to change the historical name of the Suwayda Governorate,” stressing that this is considered a “distortion of the Arab and national identity of the Jabal al-Arab.” He added, “There are remnants of the Assad regime still present in Lebanon, and they constitute a source of concern for Lebanese and Syrian security alike.”
In another context, Jumblatt appealed for the need to find a solution to the issue of Syrian revolution detainees in Lebanese prisons, stressing that they “need a fair judicial settlement that guarantees their rights and activates the role of the Lebanese judiciary in line with human and legal charters.”
In conclusion, Jumblatt emphasized the importance of establishing a new Lebanese-Syrian dialogue based on respect for mutual interests and turning the page on past interventions, for a better future for the two countries.
