The Minister of Public Health, Rakan Nasser Eddine, announced a historic decision to provide comprehensive coverage for bone marrow transplant operations in all hospitals, whether public or private.
His Excellency the Minister pointed out the exorbitant cost of these operations, explaining that they are: “Among the most expensive, ranging between $30,000 and $60,000.”
Nasser Eddine affirmed that: “The Ministry of Public Health” has conducted intensive negotiations to reach the appropriate price, adding that the ministry will bear the expenses of these operations for everyone who needs them.
This announcement came during a ceremony sponsored by the minister to reopen the mental health unit at Rafik Hariri University Hospital, in the presence of representatives from the French Development Agency (AFD), the IF Foundation, and a number of local and international partners, in addition to representatives of civil society organizations and medical and administrative staff.
He explained that this step comes as a result of close cooperation between: “The Ministry of Public Health”, through the National Mental Health Program, and the supporting bodies, where the unit has been rehabilitated and operated according to the highest standards to become a specialized center providing integrated treatment and psychological services.
Nasser Eddine considered that: “The reopening of the mental health unit represents a pivotal milestone in the path of developing the national health system, and reflects a collective commitment to providing high-quality services in a spirit of dignity and respect.”
He stressed that: “The unit is not just a treatment space, but an embodiment of the partnership and trust that has brought us together with the national program and the network of government hospitals, to build a comprehensive and community-based mental health system that responds to people’s needs effectively and humanely.”
Nasser Eddine added that Rafik Hariri University Hospital is a fundamental pillar in the public health system, and a model for integrated, multidisciplinary mental health care, stressing that the ministry is continuing to expand the scope of mental health services in various Lebanese regions, enhance the capabilities of workers in this field, and support community centers.
He concluded his speech by expressing his thanks to all parties who contributed to the success of this project, saying: “Today, we are not only reopening a unit, but we are reaffirming our commitment to hope, care and humanity in our health system.”
