The “Fatah” movement conducted elections for the leadership of the Lebanon region under the supervision of Yasser Abbas, the representative of the Palestinian President, which raised questions about its motives and goals. According to statements by its leaders, the movement aims to enhance social and humanitarian services for Palestinians in Lebanon, while emphasizing respect for Lebanese sovereignty.

The “Fatah” movement has completed the elections for the leadership of the Lebanon region. These elections, which took place under the direct supervision of the special representative of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas: his son Yasser Abbas, reshuffled the cards within the organization and raised question marks about their real dimensions. Is it an internal organizational entitlement as “Fatah” says, or a step within a broader repositioning, after handing over weapons inside the Palestinian camps?

In a related context, Youssef al-Zurai’i, a prominent member of the leadership of the “Fatah” movement in Lebanon, explained in a statement to, that what happened does not represent elections in the usual political sense, but rather a series of periodic organizational conferences that are held at intervals ranging between two and three years. He added that these conferences include in their agenda an electoral process at the end, but its essential essence lies in evaluating the previous stage and developing a plan of action for the next stage, followed by the election of members of the region’s leadership by the organization’s cadres present in Lebanon.

In response to allegations regarding the efforts of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to impose his control over the movement in the Lebanese arena, al-Zurai’i stated that the current session, despite its exceptional nature, was not held specifically for this purpose. He affirmed that President Abbas is originally the head of the “Fatah” movement and its Supreme Commander, and that this step comes within the framework of the comprehensive renewal witnessed by most of the movement’s institutions and departments in Lebanon, and it was natural that this renewal would also include the leadership of the region.

Regarding whether this step reflects a repositioning of the “Fatah” movement, al-Zurai’i pointed out that the movement is preparing for a new stage that focuses primarily on enhancing the social and humanitarian services provided to the sons of the Palestinian people in Lebanon, in addition to strengthening the fraternal relationship with the host Lebanese state. He stressed that the priority in the next stage will be to preserve the rights and needs of the Palestinian people, and to direct all efforts towards achieving this goal.

On the other hand, al-Zurai’i drew attention to the fact that the movement’s policy has always been based on respect for the sovereignty of all Arab countries, especially Lebanon, which bears the burdens of Palestinian refuge. He stressed the movement’s commitment not to interfere in any internal Lebanese affairs, and to Lebanese official decisions, stressing their full respect for the sovereignty of the Lebanese state and its authority over all its territories, and that they have no project inside Lebanon or in the camps except to preserve the rights of the Palestinian people.
