Former Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney criticized the performance of Egyptian star Mohamed Salah during the Liverpool-Chelsea match, saying that he was content to watch while the right side of his team’s defense was “being torn apart” by the Blues’ attacks.
Rooney said on his podcast on the BBC that Salah did not show any significant defensive effort, noting that this negligence contributed to the fatal winning goal that Estevao scored in the 95th minute.
He added: “We know that Salah does not defend much, but what happened against Chelsea was very disturbing, and Commander Van Dijk must intervene to inform him of the need for defensive support.”
Rooney made it clear that he was not calling for Salah to be excluded, but he likened the situation to the situation of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United, when coach Ferguson moved the Portuguese star to the depths to maintain the team’s balance.
He concluded by saying: “Salah is an exceptional player offensively, but his defensive commitment needs to be reviewed.”
