The United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed that Resolution 1701 still constitutes the basic framework for achieving stability in southern Lebanon, stressing that its full implementation is linked to the commitment of both Lebanon and Israel to what the resolution stipulates.
UNIFIL wrote, through its account on the “X” platform, that the principles of the resolution include “respect for the Blue Line, cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, and extending the authority of the Lebanese state over its entire territory.”
It explained that its role is to support Lebanon and Israel in implementing their obligations under Resolution 1701, in addition to monitoring field developments on the ground, reporting violations, and supporting the Lebanese army and local communities in its area of operations.
UNIFIL stressed that “the full implementation of Resolution 1701 ultimately depends on the commitment of both parties,” stressing that the long-term goal is “to achieve sustainable stability and security, allowing civilians to return safely to their homes.”
Resolution 1701 dates back to August 2006, when it was approved by the UN Security Council with the aim of stopping hostilities between Lebanon and Israel. It stipulated strengthening the deployment of the Lebanese army south of the Litani River in cooperation with UNIFIL, respecting the Blue Line and preventing the presence of armed forces not affiliated with the state or international forces within the scope of operations specified in the resolution.
Since then, UNIFIL has been monitoring the situation along the Blue Line, coordinating with the Lebanese army and the Israeli side through field communication mechanisms, in addition to documenting violations and submitting periodic reports to the United Nations regarding developments in its area of operations.
