The Israeli Broadcasting Authority revealed that the pro-Iranian militias in Iraq sent threatening messages to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, warning him against any military action against Hezbollah in Lebanon, stressing that they “will not stand idly by,” even if the matter required crossing the border from Iraq into Syria.
According to a report by journalist Roy Kayes in Kan News, the Iraqi militias informed Damascus that they would stand by Hezbollah if Sharaa decided to enter into a confrontation with the party, in light of a growing belief within the pro-Iranian axis that the Syrian President’s public positions do not necessarily reflect what is being prepared behind the scenes.
The report indicated that Ahmed Al-Sharaa continues to confirm publicly that he does not intend to intervene militarily in Lebanon, but he does not rule out providing other forms of support to the Lebanese government in the face of Hezbollah, which does not dispel the doubts of the parties loyal to Iran.
The report quoted an Iraqi political official familiar with the file as saying that the militias sent direct messages to Damascus, stressing that they would side with “Hezbollah” if Sharaa chose confrontation, explaining that these factions believe that this is the path that the Syrian president is preparing for.
The report pointed out that Al-Sharaa had said, in an interview with Al Jazeera yesterday, that Syria is concerned about the spread of Iraqi militias that are not under Baghdad’s authority on the Syrian border, at a time when Iran, the main supporter of these factions, continues to send its messages to Damascus.
He added that Iran recently targeted Al-Tanf base in the Syrian desert on the border with Iraq, under the pretext of the presence of American forces there, even though the American forces had withdrawn from the base.
The report indicated that “Kan News” had previously revealed that the Syrian security establishment is already preparing for the possibility of involvement in the “Hezbollah” file, despite Al-Sharaa officially announcing his rejection of US President Donald Trump’s proposal to move against the party inside Lebanese territory.
A Syrian security source affiliated with the authorities was quoted as saying that plans are being prepared behind the scenes to deal with Hezbollah in Lebanon, to be implemented when necessary, adding: “There is a gap between what is said in public and what is happening behind the scenes.”
This development reflects the increasing regional interference in the Hezbollah file, amid indications that any change in the Syrian position may open the door to a confrontation that extends beyond the Lebanese borders.
