New British Prime Minister Andy Burnham began his term by pledging to launch a new political and economic model, placing restoring stability at the top of his government’s priorities.
Burnham said on Monday: “We need to show the world that we are capable of restoring stability in Britain,” stressing his intention to propose a new model for managing the country politically and economically.
Burnham’s statements came after King Charles III assigned him to form the new British government, succeeding Keir Starmer, who submitted his resignation, and Burnham officially became prime minister after meeting with the king at Buckingham Palace.
Pictures showed the king shaking hands with Burnham inside the same room where Starmer submitted his resignation, in a well-established constitutional tradition that reflects the continuity of the transfer of royal power, according to The Times.
Today, Monday, Burnham is scheduled to announce the formation of his new government, after weeks of intense internal conflicts within the Labor Party.
The current Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, is considered the strongest candidate to take over the Treasury Ministry, after Burnham’s allies launched a harsh campaign to prevent Ed Miliband from obtaining the position, despite his economic experience.
