The US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed today, Friday, that reports about the Al-Tanf base in southeastern Syria being subjected to an Iranian attack are unfounded, denying that any of its soldiers were killed or captured.
Central Command said, in a statement published on the “X” platform, that the allegations related to targeting the Al-Tanf garrison and the capture or killing of American soldiers are “incorrect,” stressing that “no American soldier has been killed or captured in the region recently.”
The American position came after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced the targeting of what it described as an “operations command center” belonging to the American forces in the Al-Tanf area.
In the same context, a Syrian military source denied to Agence France-Presse that the Al-Tanf area had been subjected to any Iranian bombing, saying: “We deny any Iranian bombing towards the Al-Tanf area.”
Another Syrian military source also confirmed to the German News Agency (DPA) that the Al-Tanf area was not subjected to any missile strikes, explaining that Syrian border guard forces have been deployed at the site since the American forces withdrew from it last February and moved to Tower 22 inside Jordanian territory.
The source added that the area surrounding Al-Tanf became desert and devoid of residents after the residents of Al-Rukban camp left, noting that the site currently includes the Al-Tanf border crossing and a number of administrative buildings.
Iran has not yet provided any evidence to support its announcement about targeting the site, while its story contradicts the denials issued by both the US Central Command and Syrian military sources.
