The Israeli police announced the arrest of a 20-year-old American citizen, on suspicion of spying for Iranian intelligence, after he was accused of photographing sites that the authorities described as “sensitive” inside Israel.
The police said that the arrest was carried out on June 9 in cooperation with the Israeli internal security service, Shin Bet, following information received from international security services.
According to Israeli media, the suspect, who is from the Greater Jerusalem area, carried out photographic missions of sensitive sites inside Israel, in exchange for hundreds of dollars for each mission.
The reports added that he is expected to be charged with communicating with a foreign agent and endangering Israeli national security, while the authorities did not reveal the identity of the foreign intelligence services that participated in the operation.
This development comes in light of the escalation of the security and intelligence confrontation between Israel and Iran, and the exchange of accusations of carrying out espionage operations and targeting the interests of each party within the other’s territories.
