At least 6 people were killed in an armed attack targeting the headquarters of the regional command of the paramilitary Pakistan Rangers in the city of Karachi, after gunmen stormed the site using a car bomb, before violent clashes broke out with security forces.

According to police and eyewitnesses, ambulances rushed to the scene of the attack, while security forces engaged in a confrontation with the attackers in the capital of Sindh province, southern Pakistan.

An armed group called “Jamaat al-Ahrar,” which is not widely known, claimed responsibility for carrying out the attack, according to what was reported by the Associated Press.

Local media reported that the attack resulted in the killing of 3 members of the security forces, in addition to at least 3 of the attackers, during the exchange of fire that followed the storming operation.

This attack comes at a time when Pakistan is witnessing an escalation in armed attacks targeting security forces and police in recent years.

The Pakistani authorities hold the Pakistani Taliban and allied armed groups responsible for most of the violence taking place in the country.

The Pakistani Taliban is a separate organization from the Afghan Taliban, although there is an alliance between the two parties, while the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
