In a step that reflects an Arab consensus on leading the next stage in the League of Arab States, the foreign ministers of the Arab countries approved the appointment of former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as the new Secretary-General of the League, succeeding Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose term ends at the end of this month.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the foreign ministers of the Arab countries agreed, after obtaining the necessary authorization from the leaders of their countries, to appoint Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, to officially assume his duties as of July 1, 2026.
The ministry explained in a statement that the decision was taken during a meeting of Arab foreign ministers held in the Jordanian capital, noting that Fahmi will hold the position for a period of 5 years extending until 2031.
Cairo welcomed the decision, expressing its wishes to the new Secretary-General for success in leading joint Arab action during the next stage, in light of the political, economic and security challenges facing the region.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also thanked the outgoing Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, praising his role during the past ten years, and considering that he contributed to defending the interests of Arab countries and keeping pace with the regional and international files that faced the Arab world during his tenure in office.
Nabil Fahmy is considered one of the most prominent Egyptian diplomats, as he served as the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 2013 and 2014. He also previously served as Egypt’s ambassador to the United States, and participated in a number of prominent diplomatic and strategic files at the Arab and international levels.
