British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday his intention to resign from his position, stressing that he will work to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of power.

Starmer said that he informed King Charles III of his decision, indicating that he will remain in his position until the procedures for choosing his successor are completed, which is expected to be decided by next September.

He explained that the Labor Party will begin opening nominations for party leadership on July 9, in preparation for the election of a new leader to lead the government.

Starmer’s resignation comes less than two years after the Labor Party won a majority in the general elections, amid a decline in his popularity and mounting pressure within the party over the past months.

Andy Burnham’s name stands out as one of the most prominent candidates to succeed Starmer, after he strengthened his political position following his recent victory in a parliamentary seat and his return to the House of Commons.

With Starmer’s resignation, Britain is preparing for a new political phase that may lead to the country’s seventh prime minister within one decade.
