The Jordanian national team began its first participation in the World Cup finals with a loss to Austria 3-1, today, Wednesday, in the tenth group competitions in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Austrian team took the lead in the 21st minute through Romano Schmid, who fired a powerful shot that landed in the left corner of goalkeeper Yazid Abu Laila, ending the first half with his country leading by a clean goal.

Despite the delay, the Jordanian team showed an offensive character and threatened the Austrian goal on more than one occasion, through attempts to return Al-Fakhouri and Musa Al-Taamari, while the crossbar stood in the face of Ali Alwan’s header.

The second half
At the beginning of the second half, Jordan succeeded in returning to the match when Ali Alwan launched a quick counterattack and ended it with a shot that hit the post before reaching the net in the 50th minute, scoring the first Jordanian goal in the history of the World Cup.

The match witnessed an important turning point in the 67th minute when substitute Marko Arnautovic scored for the Jordanian net, but Mauritanian referee Dahan Beida canceled the goal after returning to the video assistant referee technique due to a handball that preceded the scoring.

However, the Austrian team regained its lead after only nine minutes, taking advantage of one of the corner kicks that repeatedly posed a threat to the Jordanian defense, as defender Yazan Al-Arab scored an own goal in the 76th minute.

“Al-Nashama” tried to come back again during the last minutes, but the Austrian team maintained its lead, before receiving a penalty kick in stoppage time following a handball that was awarded after reviewing the video technology, which Arnautovic translated into a third goal in the 90th + 12th minute.

With this victory, Austria earned its first three points in the group, leveling with the Argentine national team, which opened its campaign by defeating Algeria 3-0.
