A number of people were injured as a result of the explosion of an explosive device inside a car that likely belonged to a leader of the Syrian Ministry of Defense in the city of Al-Bab in the northern countryside of Aleppo, according to what local sources reported.

According to the sources, the explosion occurred near Al-Nasr Mosque (the Small Mosque) in the vicinity of the Center Roundabout in the center of the city of Al-Bab, wounding at least two people and causing material damage to the site.

The sound of the explosion was heard throughout the city, while ambulances rushed to the scene to transport the injured to hospitals for treatment, coinciding with the security services imposing a security cordon and beginning preliminary investigations to uncover the circumstances of the accident.

While initial accounts spoke of other possibilities for the causes of the explosion, including the presence of a hand grenade inside the car or the explosion of the fuel tank during welding work, local sources later suggested the explosive device hypothesis.

The Syrian official authorities have not yet issued any statement clarifying the circumstances of the accident or confirming the final cause of the explosion, while investigations are still ongoing.

The incident comes in light of the fragility of the security situation in a number of Syrian regions, especially in the countryside of Aleppo, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and the Damascus countryside, as these areas witness from time to time explosions, security incidents, and local clashes that require intervention from the security forces to restore stability.
