The Ministry of Agriculture and the United Nations Development Program launched a project to produce and distribute 1.5 million vegetable seedlings, with support from the German government, as part of the “Together from Food Security” campaign.

The initiative came as the Lebanese agricultural sector faces increasing challenges as a result of the Israeli attacks and the repercussions of successive crises. Germany, through the German Development Bank (KfW) and in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has supported the Ministry of Agriculture in its efforts to enhance food security through practical initiatives that help the most vulnerable farmers maintain and enhance local agricultural production in various Lebanese regions.

In this context, the Ministry continues to implement the “Together Food Security” campaign by launching a project to produce and distribute one million five hundred thousand diverse vegetable seedlings, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and with funding from the German government, in a qualitative step aimed at enhancing local agricultural production, expanding cultivated areas, and supporting agricultural families in various Lebanese regions.

Germany is the largest bilateral donor to Lebanon, and invests heavily in strengthening food security and the resilience of the agricultural sector. To support those affected by war and displacement, Germany has allocated a total of 153.3 million euros in humanitarian and development aid during the year 2026.

This project is one of the most prominent components of the agricultural response and recovery plan implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, as it contributes to revitalizing the agricultural production cycle and securing agricultural supplies for affected farmers, thus enhancing their ability to continue production, secure their sources of income, and maintain the stability of rural communities.

The first phase of the project includes the production and distribution of 500,000 vegetable seedlings of various varieties, which will be distributed to farmers in areas whose altitude is more than 500 meters above sea level, and in various Lebanese governorates whose climatic conditions are suitable for cultivating these varieties during the current season.

These seedlings were produced in the nursery of the Ministry of Agriculture in Abda – Akkar, which constitutes a model of the development role played by the Ministry in enhancing local production and providing high-quality agricultural inputs, in a way that supports the state’s trends towards enhancing food sufficiency and achieving more sustainable agricultural development.

Seedlings are distributed to farmers registered in the National Farmers’ Register through the agricultural centers affiliated with the Ministry, and in coordination with municipal unions and municipalities, according to clear and transparent mechanisms that ensure justice in the distribution of support and its access to the deserving beneficiaries.

This project comes within the framework of the partnership between Germany and the Ministry of Agriculture to support its comprehensive vision aimed at rebuilding the capabilities of the agricultural sector and enhancing its resilience in the face of crises, by investing in local production, supporting agricultural value chains, and enabling farmers to continue their vital role in protecting national food security.

The Ministry of Agriculture affirms its continued expansion of cooperation with international partners, donors and local institutions, based on the firm conviction that supporting Lebanese farmers is a direct investment in Lebanon’s resilience and economic and social stability, and that agriculture will remain the first line of defense for food security and sustainable development.

This project is funded by the German government through the German Development Bank (KfW), within the framework of the United Nations Development Programme’s project “Enhancing food security in Lebanon through reviving the seed production value chain at the National Agricultural Scientific Research Service (LARI).”

The project aims to enhance food security in Lebanon by reviving the national wheat seed production system, rehabilitating basic agricultural infrastructure, improving the availability of high-quality agricultural inputs, and strengthening the capabilities and resilience of farmers and agricultural institutions, especially the National Agricultural Scientific Research Service (LARI) and the Ministry of Agriculture.
