Israel demanded the cancellation of the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, based on the decision to suspend the court’s Prosecutor Karim Khan from work on charges of misconduct.
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said in a post on the “X” platform that Khan’s suspension proves, in his words, that the International Criminal Court is “corrupt to the core,” calling for the dropping of what he described as “ridiculous indictments” against Netanyahu.
The Israeli position comes after the decision of the International Criminal Court’s supervisory body to refer Karim Khan to disciplinary measures and temporarily suspend his duties, in light of allegations related to sexual misconduct towards one of his colleagues. Khan denies all the accusations against him, stressing his intention to return to work after the end of the investigations.
The International Criminal Court had previously issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu on charges related to the war in the Gaza Strip, a decision that sparked widespread political and legal controversy at the international level.
Since the issuance of the memorandum, Israel has sought to challenge its legitimacy and question the procedures followed by the court, while human rights bodies believe that investigations and judicial decisions must remain separate from administrative or personal issues related to court officials.
