Travel restrictions and strict quarantine in the countries hosting the 2026 World Cup

The United States, Mexico and Canada announced, in a joint statement, the unification and coordination of travel and public health measures for those arriving from African regions most at risk of the outbreak of the Ebola virus, as a precautionary step to protect visitors and fans before the start of the FIFA World Cup (2026) next month.

These regional moves came after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo a public health emergency of international concern.

The measures included Washington banning the entry of non-citizens and Green Card holders who were recently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan during the past 21 days. For its part, Canada imposed a temporary ban for 90 days on those arriving from these countries, while requiring its returning citizens to quarantine for 21 days.

In the same context, Mexico has tightened medical examination procedures at its airports and national ports, and required those arriving from the affected areas to adhere to temporary health isolation for the same period, to ensure the safety of participating delegations and the public.
