Researchers from the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the development of an innovative method to convert carbon dioxide into aviation fuel, in a step that may open new horizons in the field of clean energy.

According to the South China Morning Post, technical challenges in this field have been ongoing for years, due to the difficulty of producing long, stable carbon chains used in manufacturing high-quality fuel.

The new innovation relies on combining carbon dioxide with water and chemically reconstructing it to produce dense, usable liquid fuel, by converting it into long-chain hydrocarbons that are the basis for aviation fuel.

The researchers believe that the success of transferring this technology from the laboratory to industrial production may constitute an important shift in reducing carbon emissions and benefiting from carbon dioxide as an energy source instead of a polluting gas.
