The authority revealed that the urban rail transport sector recorded 42 million passengers during this quarter, of whom 31 million passengers used the Riyadh train, while the number of passengers on the automated transport train at King Abdulaziz Airport reached about 10 million passengers, while the automated transport train at Princess Noura bint Abdul Rahman University recorded about 621 thousand passengers, in an indicator that reflects the growing demand for this type of transport, and its role in enhancing the flow of movement within cities and reducing traffic congestion, in addition to Its contribution to improving the quality of life and supporting environmental sustainability and economic development.
Regarding intercity trains, the authority indicated that the number of passengers of the Haramain Express train, which connects Jeddah, Mecca and Medina, reached two million passengers, according to the Saudi News Agency “SPA”.
She explained that the number of passengers of the Orient Train, which connects the capital, Riyadh, to the Eastern Province (Dammam and Al-Mina), passing through the stations of Abqaiq, Al-Ahsa, Haradh, and Al-Kharj, amounted to more than 349 thousand passengers.
The Northern Train, which departs from Riyadh to the northwest towards Haditha near the Jordanian border, passing through Al Majmaah, Al Qassim, Hail, Al Jawf and Qurayyat, recorded about 218 thousand passengers, which embodies the role of railway transport between cities in enhancing the efficiency of geographical connectivity, as a safe and reliable means of transportation, in addition to its contribution to reducing emissions related to the environment, which enhances the efficiency of the transport system and supports the quality of life.
Regarding the transport of goods, the Authority reported that the volume of goods transported via trains amounted to more than 4 million tons of minerals and goods, of which 3 million tons were transported via the Northern Train network, while the Eastern Train network transported more than 448 thousand tons and 197 thousand standard containers, which embodies the role of rail transport of goods in raising the efficiency of supply chains and enhancing the logistical connection between ports and economic regions.
