Italian Jannik Sinner was able to achieve an important achievement, which was to win his first title in the Masters Championships on clay, and his eighth title in his professional career, after his victory over his Spanish rival, Carlos Alcaraz, in the final of the Monte Carlo Championship on Sunday.
“Siner” was able to defeat the defending champion in two straight sets with a score of 7-6 and 6-3, thus regaining the top spot in the ATP World Rankings from his Spanish counterpart.
With this victory, Sinner became the second player to win in Indian Wells and Miami, known as the “Rising Sun Double,” and then add the Monte Carlo title to them in the same season, after “Novak Djokovic” in 2015.
The Italian player also increased his tally to four consecutive titles in the thousand-point Masters tournament, after previously winning in Paris, Indian Wells and Miami, thus reaching his eighth title overall in this category.
After the coronation, Siner stated that the goal of participation was to play the largest possible number of matches in preparation for the upcoming major tournaments, considering that the level was very high from both sides, despite the difficult conditions and winds that made the match different from the rest of the tournament days.
He added that returning to the top of the classification means a lot to him, but he stressed that the classification remains a secondary matter, expressing his great happiness in achieving a major title on clay courts.
It is noteworthy that the last confrontation between “Siner” and “Alcaraz” was about five months ago, when the Italian defeated the Spaniard in the final of the final tournament of the professional season.
“Siner” did not hesitate to take advantage of the opportunity to win the title, and celebrated his most important victory on clay after a mistake committed by “Alcaraz” on the match point, then the two players exchanged hugs at the net.
For his part, “Alcaraz” praised the level of his opponent, considering that what he has presented this season is “impressive,” and that his achievement of putting his name alongside “Djokovic” on this path is “incredible.”
Sinner is currently looking forward to continuing his brilliance on clay courts, before participating in the French Open next May, with the aim of achieving his first major title on this surface, after losing last year’s final to Alcaraz. (Al Ain)
