Syria and Iraq: Discussions to develop cooperation in the energy sector

During a phone call, Syrian Energy Minister Muhammad al-Bashir discussed with Iraqi Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul-Ghani ways to develop bilateral cooperation in the field of energy between the two countries.

The Syrian News Agency (SANA) reported that the call witnessed praise for the unified and joint efforts aimed at starting the export of Iraqi oil through Syrian territory, in addition to examining the possibility of supplying Syria with domestic gas, in the context of enhancing energy security and meeting local requirements.

The two parties also discussed the restoration of oil transportation pipelines, in particular the Kirkuk-Baniyas pipeline, in a way that supports the development and activation of the oil export process.

The Iraqi Oil Minister stressed that this cooperation will continue in a steady and sustainable manner, and that it will not be linked to the current situation or the “existing war,” while stressing his country’s interest in developing bilateral relations in this important sector.

It is noteworthy that the first shipments of Iraqi fuel have arrived in the tanks of the Baniyas refinery through the Al-Tanf border crossing, in preparation for export to global markets, where the “Syrian Petroleum Company” teams began unloading operations, in preparation for preparing the shipments and reloading them onto sea tankers specially prepared to transport them to their final destination for export.
