Polish proposal: Convert a cargo plane into an air defense system to confront drones

Polskie Zakłady Lotnicze (PZL) has submitted a proposal aimed at converting the “PZL M28” military transport aircraft of the Polish Air Force into a specialized platform for intercepting drones.

The project proposes equipping the aircraft with a variety of weapons mounted at the front, rear and sides, to provide comprehensive fire coverage at an angle of 360 degrees. These weapons include 20 mm cannons, 70 mm rocket pods, as well as light and heavy machine guns. The aircraft will also be equipped with an electro-optical/infrared targeting system mounted below the nose.

The aircraft features two turbofan engines and high wings, allowing it to take off and land from short, unequipped runways about 500 meters long, and also provides a clear firing range for side weapons. Its speed and ability to fly for long periods enable it to carry out extended patrols, while maintaining low maintenance costs and high operational readiness.

A specialized platform for countering drones: The project aims to use the aircraft as a continuous interception platform, occupying a position between ground defense systems and advanced combat aircraft. This would reduce the burden on fighters such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-35 Lightning II, directing them to higher priority missions.

The aircraft will focus on targeting loitering munitions, reconnaissance drones, and drone swarms flying at low altitudes and at speeds between 100 and 200 kilometers per hour, conditions that are not ideal for supersonic fighters.

The idea is based on equipping the aircraft with systems capable of dealing with small targets with a low radar signature, with the ability to engage from short distances not exceeding a few hundred meters, which enhances the accuracy of the hit thanks to the density of fire. In addition, the system allows day and night operation with the possibility of rapid 360-degree firing against individual and group targets.

Lessons from the war in Ukraine: This trend is based on field developments in Ukraine, where modified aircraft such as the An-28 and Yak-52 were used in anti-drone missions, achieving remarkable results in destroying large numbers of them.

These experiences reflect a growing trend in militaries toward adopting flexible, low-cost solutions, rather than relying entirely on expensive, sophisticated systems.

If this project is implemented, the M28 “aircraft artillery” concept could contribute to strengthening Polish air defense readiness and improving the efficiency of military resource distribution.
