Google has begun testing a beta version of the “Gemini” application for Apple’s Mac devices, with the aim of strengthening its competitive position in the face of other artificial intelligence applications such as ChatGPT and Claude, which are currently available as standalone applications on the macOS system.
According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Google has made an early version of the application available within a limited pilot program targeting users from outside the company, with the aim of collecting their feedback and identifying errors before the official launch. The company assured test participants that the current version is just a preliminary version that includes only basic functions, and that many additional features will be added later.
The application provides a variety of capabilities, including creating images, videos and audio recordings, analyzing data, building tables and graphs, as well as solving mathematical problems and performing online searches. The application also supports browsing previous conversations and analyzing attached files, providing a personalized user experience.
The application bears the code name “Janus,” and the start of external tests indicates the proximity of its official launch, although Google has not announced a specific date for the launch yet. However, this is expected to happen in conjunction with the company’s developer conference next May.
Google is also testing a new feature known as “Desktop Intelligence,” which allows the application to access data from other applications on Mac devices, such as Calendar, with the aim of providing more personalized answers.
This feature relies on analyzing screen content and pulling data from other applications when using Gemini, enhancing its interactive capabilities.
Currently, Mac users are forced to use Gemini through the browser only, while the new application will provide faster access and ease of uploading files, which are basic uses of artificial intelligence tools.
This step comes within the framework of increasing competition between technology companies to put artificial intelligence tools within the reach of the largest possible number of users.
On the other hand, Apple is developing a new smart assistant with the code name “Campo”, as part of the upcoming updates to iOS 27 and macOS 27 systems, while relying partly on “Google” models to enhance artificial intelligence capabilities.
