Media sources reported that Microsoft is seriously considering taking legal measures against both its partner, Open AI, and Amazon. This potential move comes against the backdrop of new agreements that may conflict with the existing exclusive arrangements between Microsoft and OpenAI, the company developing the artificial intelligence technology “Chat GPT.”
The British newspaper “Financial Times” reported that the essence of the dispute revolves around a deal estimated at approximately $50 billion, after “Amazon and OpenAI” concluded an agreement that makes “Amazon Web Services” the exclusive external cloud provider for the “Frontier” platform, which is a specialized platform for developing and operating artificial intelligence applications.
According to the report, the disagreements revolve around the extent to which this platform can be provided through Amazon services without negatively affecting the partnership agreement with Microsoft, which clearly stipulates that access to “Open AI” models is exclusively through Microsoft’s “Azure” cloud platform.
The sources were unable to independently verify the accuracy of this information, while the companies concerned have not yet issued any official comments on these reports.
The report also indicated that Microsoft officials believe that these new arrangements may conflict with the essence of the existing agreement, and that there are currently ongoing talks between the parties concerned with the aim of resolving the dispute amicably before launching the “Frontier” platform, and avoiding resorting to the courts.
It is worth noting that Microsoft is considered a major investor in “Open AI,” as it invested about one billion dollars in 2019, then another $10 billion in 2023, before the two parties signed a new agreement last year that allows expanding the scope of “Open AI” partnerships with other companies.
In a joint statement issued last month, it was confirmed that Microsoft reserves exclusive rights to access the intellectual property of the “Open AI” models, and that the “Azure” platform remains the exclusive cloud provider for these models, while emphasizing the continued cooperation between the various parties in developing artificial intelligence technologies.
