Reuters reported, based on informed sources, that the United States urged Syria to consider sending forces to the eastern region of Lebanon with the aim of helping to disarm Hezbollah.
The same sources indicate that Damascus is reluctant to take such a step, for fear of getting involved in a broader conflict in the Middle East.
This proposal comes in light of a noticeable escalation in tension on the Lebanese front, as Israeli raids continue on the southern and Bekaa regions, coinciding with increasing warnings of the expansion of the scope of military operations.
This also coincides with increasing international pressure to implement Resolution 1701 and strengthen security measures, especially with regard to the arms issue, in light of the continuing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.
Talk about a possible Syrian role shows the complexity of the regional situation, especially in light of the overlap between the Lebanese and Syrian arenas, and the concerned parties’ fear of a deterioration of the situation towards a broader confrontation that includes multiple fronts in the region.
