The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the targeting of the “United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon” and stressed that this attack represents a violation of international law and Security Council resolutions.
In a statement issued by it, the Ministry indicated that gunfire targeted UNIFIL patrols on Sunday, March 15, 2026, in three separate incidents, while these patrols were carrying out their routine tasks near their bases stationed in the towns of Yater, Deir Kifa, and Qalawayh, located in southern Lebanon.
The Ministry considered that this dangerous and unjustified attack on peacekeeping forces represents a violation of international law and Security Council resolutions.
The Ministry also added that UNIFIL, in accordance with its mandate stipulated in Security Council Resolution 1701, has the right to take the necessary measures to defend itself and confront any attempts aimed at preventing it by force from carrying out the tasks entrusted to it.
The Ministry expressed Lebanon’s full and firm solidarity with UNIFIL and its leadership and with the countries participating in it, stressing Lebanon’s deep appreciation for the pivotal role played by these forces in supporting peace, security and stability in southern Lebanon.
The Ministry renewed its reminder of the “Council of Ministers” decision issued on March 2, 2026, which prohibits “Hezbollah’s military and security activities” and considers them illegal.
She stressed that this decision obligates “the party to hand over its weapons to the Lebanese state,” stressing that the government’s decision in this regard is clear and does not tolerate interpretation, and that it will not allow any armed faction outside the scope of the state to drag Lebanon into a state of chaos in the service of suspicious goals.
At the conclusion of the statement, the Ministry affirmed the Lebanese state’s determination to extend its sovereignty over its entire territory and confine arms to its legitimate institutions, in order to protect Lebanon and preserve its security and the interests of its people.
