Israeli Channel 12 reported that the military confrontations on the northern front erupted at an undesirable time for Israel, considering that “the escalation began on the part of Hezbollah.”
In a related context, Axios revealed that the United States is studying a French proposal aimed at putting an end to the war in Lebanon, and includes political and security steps between the Lebanese and Israeli parties.
According to the website, the proposal includes UNIFIL forces verifying the disarmament of Hezbollah south of the Litani River, while an international coalition, authorized by the Security Council, will supervise the process of disarming the party in the rest of Lebanon.
The proposal also stipulates the redeployment of the Lebanese army south of the Litani River, with a parallel Israeli withdrawal within one month from the areas it has occupied since the beginning of the current war.
The report indicated that the proposed declaration also includes Lebanon’s readiness to open negotiations on a permanent non-aggression agreement with Israel. Following the signing of this agreement, Israel will withdraw from five sites in southern Lebanon that it has controlled since November 2024.
According to Axios, the proposed declaration includes initial Lebanese recognition of Israel and a commitment from the Lebanese government to respect Israel’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The website also reported that the negotiations will begin at the level of senior diplomats before moving to the level of senior political leadership, while French officials seek to hold these talks in Paris.
The report explained that the French proposal is based on opening negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, with the support of the United States and France, with the aim of reaching a “political declaration” to be agreed upon within one month.
The website indicated that the Lebanese government approved the plan as a basis for peace talks, in light of growing concern that the renewed war that broke out after Hezbollah missile attacks on Israel could lead to the destruction of the country.
He also noted that the French government was the one who formulated this proposal to end the war, and that Israel and the United States are currently reviewing it.
