The Italian police arrested a 24-year-old Bangladeshi man after his failed attempt to rob a branch of UniCredit Bank in Milan. He ended up trapped inside the bank vault for hours on end, requiring firefighters to rescue him.
Details indicate that the suspect was able to sneak into the vault area inside the bank located on Certosa Street during official business hours. Unfortunately for him, the vault’s internal locking system activated and he was trapped inside. The alarm went off after security personnel noticed his suspicious movements and attempts to open deposit boxes via surveillance cameras.
After activating the alarm, the security authorities were informed of the number 112, and the police arrived and imposed a security cordon around the place. The process of extracting the young man faced difficulty, as the keys to the safe were not found, as they were located inside a locked box with a time lock that would not be opened until eight o’clock the next morning.
Faced with this technical problem, firefighters intervened and forcefully opened the safe to retrieve the keys and open the door. The young man was arrested after about 9 hours of detention inside the fortified bank. Sources reported that his health condition was good despite him staying inside all this time.
UniCredit Bank confirmed the occurrence of the incident, and indicated that the alarm systems worked effectively and contributed to the rapid detection of the theft attempt. The bank confirmed that the security measures applied ensured the protection of assets and the safety of the place, in addition to the safety of the suspect, stressing its full cooperation with the authorities to investigate the incident.
Judicial authorities have begun investigating the incident, and it is expected that the accused will be charged with attempted armed robbery.
