The Fishermen’s Committee, affiliated with the Association of Fishermen’s Cooperatives and Syndicates, announced the holding of its second meeting, which it described as “critical” for protecting the Lebanese maritime identity. This meeting, which included experts and specialists from the Faculty of Agriculture at the Lebanese University and the General National Union of Cooperative Societies, combined the practical knowledge of fishermen with rigorous academic studies.
During the meeting, an in-depth discussion took place on the draft proposal for the Fisheries and Aquaculture Law, and the final version of the amendments was unanimously approved. These amendments were based mainly on two things: first, ensuring the social and economic rights of the fisherman and ensuring a decent life for him, and second, setting scientific standards to preserve fish wealth for future generations.
The statement explained that these proposals will be formally presented to representatives and the Ministries of Agriculture, Public Works, and Transport, to serve as a “road map” for issuing a modern law that preserves the dignity of fishermen and protects the marine environment.
