Between demonstrations and discussions... An Israeli message from Australia: "We are not afraid"

Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited Moriah School in Sydney, Australia. During his visit, he gave a speech in which he touched on the issue of anti-Semitism and the importance of strengthening bilateral ties between Israel and Australia, especially in light of the charged atmosphere that Australia is witnessing due to regional and international events.

Referring to the protests and confrontations that took place near the Hanukkah massacre commemoration ceremony, Herzog stated: “Those who curse us and spread the biggest lies against our people do not want to hear that.” He added, expressing his belief that “the silent majority in Australia wants to listen and work to put relations back on the right track.”

The Israeli president also stressed that “Australia is witnessing a huge wave of anti-Semitism that we have never seen before,” and believed that it requires “standing firm, looking into their eyes and not being afraid.”

In his speech, he stressed the importance of resolutely confronting anti-Semitism, while continuing to support and develop bilateral relations, emphasizing the role of Australian society in encouraging dialogue and expanding horizons of cooperation with Israel in various fields.

Herzog’s visit to Sydney comes at a time of growing debate in Australia about freedom of expression and the limits of demonstration, in addition to increasing concern among Jewish communities about manifestations of anti-Semitism. In recent years, Israeli-Australian relations have witnessed cooperation in the political, security and educational fields, but recent regional events have led to the emergence of tensions in public circles, prompting Israeli officials to strengthen communication with Australian leaders and communities to emphasize the importance of partnership and dialogue.
