Al-Saadi Gaddafi, the son of Muammar Gaddafi, considered the burial ceremony of his brother Saif al-Islam Gaddafi a “national referendum” that reflects his popularity, based on the huge numbers of mourners.
Al-Saadi Gaddafi stated through his account on the X platform, saying:
“The funeral of the era.. the largest funeral in the history of Libya! Praise be to God, may God honor you, Saif al-Islam, and you won the elections while you were dead! This is a national referendum.. Oh God, make Libya a safe country and reconcile the Libyans.”
Saif al-Islam’s funeral took place in Bani Walid, western Libya, a city known for its support of the former Gaddafi regime. The city witnessed a large influx of people to attend the funeral, which was held with tight security measures. Thousands of people participated in the funeral in the city, which is about 170 kilometers south of Tripoli.
The assassination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi raised important questions about the political parties that might benefit from this incident, in addition to the professional manner in which the assassination was carried out. In this context, the Public Prosecution announced the launch of an investigation to uncover the identity of the perpetrators. According to information conveyed by Saif al-Islam’s lawyer, the perpetrators are a group consisting of four people.
It is noteworthy that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi ran for the presidential elections in 2021 in the city of Sabha, relying on the support of supporters of the former regime, but the elections were later postponed for political and security reasons.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s whereabouts remained unknown until his assassination was announced on Tuesday at his home in the city of Zintan, located about 145 kilometers southwest of the capital, Tripoli.
