Israeli media sources reported that Democratic Representative in the US Congress, Brad Sherman, stated that Hezbollah is making “resolute efforts to rebuild its ranks and arm it,” in light of the security and political developments taking place in Lebanon and the region.
According to what was reported by these sources, Sherman added that “American support for the Lebanese government must be linked to making real progress in disarming Hezbollah,” stressing that continuing to provide this support without taking concrete steps on this path does not serve the stated goals of American policy.
The American representative also pointed out that the current time represents a “historic and limited opportunity” to disarm Hezbollah and end what he called “its control over the Lebanese state,” calling for exploiting this opportunity to bring about a real change in the balance of power within Lebanon.
In the same context, Israeli media reported that the Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Affairs Committee in the US House of Representatives, Mike Mueller, stated that “Lebanon stands at a crossroads,” and indicated that Hezbollah’s influence “has declined significantly,” considering that this is due in large part to what he described as “decisive Israeli measures.”
