The new documentary about the life of Melania Trump exceeded all expectations in North America over the weekend, bringing in $7 million in revenue, a performance that raised eyebrows given the nature of documentaries.
“Melania,” produced by Amazon MGM, ranked third on the box office list. The film focuses on details from the First Lady’s life in the 20 days leading up to her husband’s inauguration as President of the United States in 2025.
Analyst David A. commented: Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research said, “This start, while excellent for a documentary, would have been troubling for any other film, given its high production cost of $75 million and limited opportunities to generate significant revenue from abroad.” He added: “But this work is considered a political investment rather than a profitable cinematic project. And $75 million is a small amount for Amazon.”
In contrast, 20th Century Film’s “Second Help” topped the box office, earning $20 million, Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday. The film, which stars Rachel McAdams and…Dylan O’Brientells the story of a woman and her manager trying to survive on a deserted island after their plane crashes.
This film represents director Sam Raimi’s return to this type of film, after the success he achieved in the 1980s with the Evil Dead film series. Gross described the launch as “excellent for a new horror film, a strong work that attracts a wide segment of the audience.”
The science fiction film “Iron Lang” came in second place with revenues of $18 million. The film is based on a video game and takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. It is written, directed and financed by YouTube star Mark Fischbach, known as “Markiplayer.”
Fourth place went to the animated film “Zootopia 2,” produced by Disney and nominated for an Oscar, achieving revenues of $5.8 million in the United States and Canada. The action thriller “Shelter,” starring Jason Statham, came in fifth, with revenues reaching $5.5 million in its first weekend in theaters.
