The Democratic Gathering issued a statement clarifying its position on the draft general budget law, coinciding with the start of the parliamentary session dedicated to discussing the budget.
The “Democratic Gathering” recalled the proposals for laws that it had previously presented, stressing the importance of fairness to employees, wage earners, and retirees in the public sector, both civilians and military, referring to the proposal submitted by the bloc, which aims to include aid in the basic salary.
The statement indicated that the “Progressive Socialist Party” and the “Democratic Gathering” emphasized the necessity of approving a balanced general budget, considering at the same time that this does not negate the fact that the current budget is of a large operational nature, as the investment percentage in it does not exceed 12% of the total budget.
The statement continued that, based on the “Progressive Socialist Party’s” keenness to preserve citizens’ rights, dignity, and sources of livelihood, the proposals put forward by the “Democratic Meeting” to increase state revenues without adding burdens on citizens were recalled, through:
“Approval of the proposal for progressivity and a wealth tax.”
“Investing marine and river properties in a way that constitutes an important return for the state, removing encroachments and making the necessary settlements that lead to the restoration of lost rights.”
“Activating collection and taking the necessary reform measures to prevent tax evasion and customs smuggling.”
“Creating the investment fund.”
“The state’s investment in its properties, especially since the real estate portfolio constitutes about 13% of Lebanon’s area.”
“Regulating the sands and crushers sector, collecting appropriate allowances for the state, and addressing the environmental reality resulting from the devouring of public spaces and lands.”
The “Democratic Gathering” concluded its statement by emphasizing the necessity of approving its proposal, which aims to integrate 50% of the total social assistance and supplements into the basic salary of employees, wages, employees, and contractors, both civilian and military.
