Dr. Kamal Shehadeh, Minister of Displaced Persons and Minister of State for Technology and Artificial Intelligence, participated in the “K-12 Education in Lebanon” forum, which was jointly organized by the American University of Beirut (AUB), the National School, and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and was held at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC).
During his speech, Shehadeh stated, “Artificial intelligence and digital technology are creating a comprehensive revolution in various aspects of life, especially in the education sector, noting that the use of artificial intelligence techniques contributes to improving learning outcomes by between 20 and 40 percent. He stressed that education in the next stage must focus on developing technological culture and data culture in addition to traditional curricula.”
He also pointed out “the potential impact of artificial intelligence on basic human skills that must be preserved and enhanced, at the forefront of which are critical thinking, problem solving, and empathy, stressing that these skills remain essential and cannot be replaced by technology.”
Shehadeh reviewed the role of the Ministry of State for Technology and Artificial Intelligence (MITAI) in adapting to this development, noting “the Ministry’s focus on protecting data, enhancing cybersecurity, and ensuring the ethical use of artificial intelligence.” He pointed out “the launch of a national initiative to develop technological skills under the title of the ‘Nomu’ programme, which aims to empower the Lebanese and build their digital capabilities to meet the challenges of the future.”
