Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri clarified in a statement to ” الأساس ميديا” that the Saudi position is based on supporting the Lebanese state through activating the inaugural address and the ministerial statement, stressing that this is in line with his personal vision, and described his meeting with Prince Yazid bin Farhan, the Saudi envoy in charge of the Lebanese file, as positive.
In the context of talking about the regional situation, especially the tension between the United States and Iran, Berri stated that he is aware of efforts being made through a Saudi move in coordination with Qatar and the Sultanate of Oman towards the American side, in order to avoid the outbreak of war. Referring to information about a possible Turkish role in this regard, he mentioned that Turkey witnessed solidarity demonstrations with Tehran.
On the reason for suspending the meetings of the “Mechanism” committee, he stated that Israel does not want to implement the cessation of hostilities agreement that was signed on November 27, 2024, knowing that the agreement was made with the participation of the Americans, the French, and the United Nations.
Amidst the belief of some observers that Lebanon is in a state of anticipation as a result of the freezing of the “Mechanism” meetings and the postponement of the army support conference to the beginning of March, Berri believes that the state of anticipation is not limited to Lebanon alone, but includes the entire region in light of the conflicts and lack of stability.
Regarding the impact of the American-Iranian confrontation or any potential negotiations between them on the Lebanese arena, he stressed that the results in this regard are unpredictable, stressing that any internal course in Lebanon remains dependent on consensus, to the extent that the simplest appointments require this consensus.
Regarding the parliamentary elections, he affirmed that there are no obstacles preventing them from being held on their scheduled date in May, and as for the talk of postponing them for two months until July, if it happens, it is not considered a real postponement.
