زلزال بعلبك يثير "القلق": هل تتسع رقعة النشاط الزلزالي؟

The residents of Hermel and the Northern Bekaa felt an earthquake that struck the Baalbek area this afternoon, raising questions about whether this tremor is related to larger seismic activity, especially after recording three tremors last week. Is this tremor normal? And should we be concerned?

In this context, the Director of the National Center for Geophysics (Earthquake Observatory), Marlene Al-Brax, explained in a statement to , that “an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded today in the Al-Labweh area within the Baalbek district, and a number of citizens in the area felt it.”

She also indicated that “the tremor does not have any unusual character, and it is considered within the natural fault movement associated with seismic activity in Lebanon, and what made citizens feel it is that its strength exceeded 3 degrees on the Richter scale.”

She added: “Lebanon is located within a range that contains seismic faults that are permanently present, but this tremor does not currently indicate any unusual seismic activity, but rather is a natural movement within the tectonic activity of the region.”

In conclusion, Al-Brax affirmed that “such tremors are considered very normal, and do not necessarily mean the possibility of stronger tremors, nor do they indicate an increase in the level of seismic risk in the current stage.”
