International politics analysts have revealed the possibility of an imminent American escalation against the Iranian regime, which may take various forms, starting with cyberattacks and not excluding military options. At the same time, analyses differed regarding the repercussions of American calls for demonstrators to seize state institutions. While some see it as a necessary step to organize the popular movement, others warn of the risk of sliding into wider chaos.
“James Robbins,” a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council, confirmed that US President “Donald Trump” intends to fulfill his pledges to intervene if the Iranian regime continues to suppress and kill demonstrators.
“Trump” announced on Tuesday the cancellation of all scheduled meetings with Iranian officials until what he described as “killing protesters” stops, calling on Iranians to continue protesting and take control of state institutions, and demanding that Iran be made “great again.”
In the same context, an American official told Al Jazeera that President “Trump” will discuss, on Tuesday afternoon, with his national security team the options available regarding Iran, including military options.
“Robbins” explained that the US Department of Defense has presented offers that include broad options that go beyond political statements, including launching cyberattacks to disrupt government websites or providing open internet to demonstrators, in addition to carrying out specific military strikes that may target missile and drone programs, and striking security agencies directly involved in suppressing protests.
“Robbins” believes that protesters must move from the stage of “raising their voices” to “organizing their ranks,” and controlling government facilities, starting from small towns to Tehran, with the aim of imposing a new political reality.
In contrast, Professor of International Relations at the University of Cambridge, Dr. “Roxanne Farman Farmaian,” warned of the danger of this trend, and described calls to seize state institutions as a “recipe for wider chaos,” stressing that the majority of Iranians fear instability and reject foreign intervention.
“Farman” cited the events of January 6, 2021, in Washington, considering that storming institutions is not a sound solution, and confirming that Iranians do not want to see their country turn into a conflict zone similar to Syria or Afghanistan.
According to the analysis presented by “Robbins,” “Trump” will not be affected by international criticism, especially Russian criticism, as he places American interests and changing the behavior of the Iranian regime at the top of his priorities in the next stage, predicting that the Iranian regime will face an “imminent attack” if it continues its violent repression.
