The “Russia Today” website reported that the Israeli platform “Natsiv Net” revealed that Syria has begun receiving shipments of natural gas coming from Jordan and Egypt, in order to operate power generation plants. As a result of this step, the electricity production capacity in Syria has increased to about 3000 megawatts.
The platform explained that this measure comes within the framework of two agreements recently signed by Egypt with the aim of supplying Lebanon and Syria with natural gas, noting that the gas destined for the two countries is likely extracted from the Israeli gas fields in the Mediterranean.
According to the platform, the agreement includes the purchase of up to 4 million cubic meters of gas per day, in an annual deal estimated at about $800 million, with the aim of securing stable energy sources and improving basic services provided to Syrian citizens.
The report quoted Syrian Energy Minister Muhammad al-Bashir as personally announcing the start of the pumping process during a field visit to the Nasseria power plant in the Damascus countryside, where he met with the administration and technicians, listened to the operational challenges, before opening the gas valve, signaling the start of receiving supplies coming through Jordan.
The minister also explained that the Nasseria plant, which has a production capacity of 450 megawatts, had been operating at less than 30% of its capacity in recent years due to fuel shortages. He pointed out that its full operation will directly contribute to raising the total electricity production in Syria to 3000 megawatts.
The platform believes that these developments come in a broader geopolitical context, which may reflect “the revival of an old American plan” aimed at supplying neighboring countries, including former enemies, with Israeli natural gas under the auspices of Washington, as a means of promoting regional stability and linking economic interests.
Natsiv Net concluded by pointing out that what was considered years ago as a “distant vision,” which is Israel supplying all its neighbors with gas, is gradually turning into a tangible reality, with Israeli gas flowing through the networks of Egypt and Jordan to the heart of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
