A statement was issued by former Prime Minister Najib Mikati addressing the recent controversy surrounding the circumstances of the binding parliamentary consultations conducted by President General Joseph Aoun, which concluded with the appointment of President Nawaf Salam to form the government.
Mikati noted that some recent parliamentary testimonies before the Public Prosecutor, Judge Jamal Al-Hajjar, were accompanied by a wave of statements and interpretations in which the constitutional aspect intertwined with the political position and various complex considerations.
He affirmed that, based on the path he has followed throughout his political life, which is based on staying away from disagreements and unproductive discussions, and to avoid escalating the existing controversy, he would like to emphasize that the issue of parliamentary consultations and the circumstances surrounding the naming of the current Prime Minister is now in the past, and that he has no connection, either directly or indirectly, to any debate or discussion on this topic or its details.
He added that the current government, which has won the confidence of the Parliament, is called upon to continue its work to implement what it has pledged in its ministerial statement and in its official meetings, especially with regard to imposing the authority of the state over all its territory, restricting weapons to the army and security forces, in addition to addressing economic, financial and social issues, responding to livelihood, labor and union demands, and also finding solutions to complex and chronic files.
In conclusion of his statement, Mikati thanked all those who showed their sympathy and solidarity, stressing that they will remain together in various national stages, whether inside or outside the authority, stressing that the most important thing is to cooperate to protect Lebanon, preserve its sovereignty, preserve the dignity of its people, build its institutions, and draw its bright future.
