Instagram’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, indicated that the quality of images produced by artificial intelligence will see a marked improvement in the coming years, making it very difficult to distinguish them from real images. According to a report published by “The Verge,” Mosseri stated: “The old Instagram is dead.”
In a lengthy post on the platform, Mosseri expressed his concern about the future of “Instagram” in light of the increasing spread of content created by artificial intelligence, explaining: “I have lived most of my life believing that photos and videos are always real and believable, but this is no longer the case, and it will take us years to adapt to this situation.”
Mosseri stressed that distinguishing real content has become more important than chasing fake content, and that the responsibility lies with camera and phone manufacturers to develop mechanisms that allow watermarks or data coding to be placed on images, making it easier to identify their origin.
He also suggested that photographers and artists share photos that look spontaneous and not completely perfect, in order to facilitate the process of verifying their authenticity, pointing out that the current trend towards producing attractive and professional images is no longer appropriate in light of the widespread proliferation of AI-generated content.
